Vertigo — What are the basic commands?

Check Vertigo's Status: squeue

This command shows you the status of Vertigo in a nutshell. The typical output looks like this:

JOBID PARTITION NAME USER ST TIME NODES NODELIST(REASON)
    1 debug exampleJob bailo R 17:19:40 1 vertigo
2 standard anotherJob bailo PD 0:00 1 (Resources)
3 parallel threadedJob bailo PD 0:00 1 (Priority)
4 parallel anotherJob bailo PD 0:00 1 (Priority)

  • JOBID is the ID number associated with your job. You will need it to query detailed information about your job, or to pause or cancel it.
  • PARTITION indicates the queue (partition) where the job is assigned.
  • NAME is the name you assigned the job in the submission script .
  • ST is the job's status. Typically, this is one of PD (pending), R (running), CG (completing), or CD (completed).
  • TIME indicates how long the job has run.
  • NODES indicates the number of nodes in use (this always 1 in Vertigo, since Vertigo is a single machine).
  • NODELIST(REASON) can be one of two things. If the job is running, it indicates the node (in our case, this is always vertigo ). If the job is still pending, it indicates the reason why it hasn't started yet. Typically, the job at the top of the queue indicates (Resources) , meaning that the required resources (threads, RAM) are not yet available. Jobs further down the queue indicate (Priority) , meaning other jobs have priority.

If you want to see only your jobs, and not anybody else's, you can run squeue -u USER, where USER should be your username. For instance, I run squeue -u bailo.

Check A Job's Details: scontrol show jobid -dd JOBID

Replace JOBID with the actual ID number of your job.

This command shows you all the details about a specific job, including many not shown by squeue.

Cancel a Job: scancel JOBID

Replace JOBID with the actual ID number of your job.

Beware, this cannot be undone! If you cancel a job that is already running, you may lose progress.

Submit a Job to the Queue: sbatch SCRIPT

Replace SCRIPT with the name of your submission script.
